Breathing problems--panic attacks?

My 17-year-old daughter has been complaining about off-and-on difficulty in breathing for the last year or so. We DO live in a high-allergen area, and she is a little over-weight. But she exercises frequently, and her breathing difficulties don't seem to interfere with that. For that matter, they come & go unpredictably, and there's no obvious reason.

There's a history of panic attacks in my family, although I've never had one. Could just this one symptom be indicative of anxiety issues or panic attacks?

Anxiety and panic attacks most definitely affect our breathing. Many people breathe incorrectly, from the top of their lungs, and this makes anxiety much worse. It is like a cycle. To stop the cycle, one must learn to breathe correctly. Have your daughter lie flat on her back on her bed, and place her hand over her abdomen. If she is breathing incorrectly she will not notice her abdomen rising and falling, This means she is breathing thru the top of her lungs, which causes light headedness and adds to panic and anxiety. Your daughter needs to practice breathing so that when she places her hand on her abdomen she can see and feel her abdomen rise and fall with each breath. She needs to practice like this often, until she learns to do it automatically. She can then do it even when she is sitting in class, or in a waiting room, or whatever. If we continually breathe thru the bottom of our lungs, it will soon become automatic. Panic attacks can usually stopped by breathing this way. Blessings to you and your daughter !
